Hethersett Travel Plan event September 2022
On Saturday 3rd September 2022, the Smarter Travel team invited the residents of Kett’s Meadow and Heather Gardens down to the Hethersett Village Hall for an active travel event.
On behalf of us, Persimmon Homes and Taylor Wimpey, we wanted to engage the new residents in the new community, showing them what Hethersett not only has to offer, but to discuss all things active travel, sustainable and offer our services and knowledge.
Smarter Travel reached out to some other local groups and traders, so the event had more of a community feel. On the day we had Wonky Wheels, which are a community voluntary led bicycle workshop based in Hethersett, offering free guided cycles and service workshop tutorials, with the aim to encourage more people to cycle. Also joined by Hethersett Parish council, who were more than happy to discuss any matter or concerns regarding changes to the village, volunteering, council meetings, planning changes and even local groups such as Hethersett hearts and the litter picking groups. As well as the local rugby team, The Crusaders with some great games for people to play on the day. The Crusaders had loads of information on what the club has to offer for both members and non members and expressing how excited they are that the development is on the doorstep of the club, hoping that this will encourage new member and players to the game.
The village has a beautiful gift and craft shop named Hodge Podge, selling many locally sourced handmade items, as well as homewares, cards, and jewelry. This family run business also attended the event for the day to showcase what they have to offer.
Ed the owner of Mini Monsters roadshow came along with his creepy crawlies, teaching people the importance of the natural world and how important animal welfare is to the environment.
Hethersett also hosts a fantastic library, which also has an inhouse Post Office, the staff gave our team loads of information to hand out on the day of what they have to offer and free bookmarks for all attending. And not forgetting Elsies pizza of Hethersett, selling their delicious homemade wood fired pizza’s for the residents to purchase and support.
The day was relevant, informative and the residents we met were very interactive. Many residents came down to meet us and talk about what we do, also to have their bikes looked at by Wonky Wheels. The teams also handed out Bike Register kits to those we met, so they can keep their bicycles safe and secure. From talking to the community, we have established many work for the local Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and the University of East Anglia, so have moved to this development for its ideal location, they are longing for a more suitable cycle path along the Colney Lane and a more established bus service so they don’t have to travel by car so often.
The Hethersett community certainly are trying to play their part with active travel and enjoying how the development is moving on so far.
